The Best Burr Coffee Grinder in 2018: Reviews & Buying Guide

Are you here because you want to take the guesswork out of grinding your coffee? Are you looking for the best burr grinder?

I congratulate you on this; it took me years, thousand of dollars and I-don’t-know-how-many wasted coffee beans to figure this little secret out. Back of the envelope calculations tell me I wasted over $1150 in ruined beans and new grinders. Ouch!

I had the best gear, the best beans, but no matter what I did my coffee NEVER tasted as good as it did at the local coffee shop. I had NO IDEA that that using an average grinder was ruining my coffee.

So you know that a great grinder is critical...but now you have another problem: Which burr grinder should you choose out of the 170 (and growing) on the market?

Save your time, money, and precious coffee beans by checking out these 6 grinders that will guarantee you have the perfect grinds and hence, coffee, to start every morning with.

You'd be a fool to assume that grinding coffee beans is all they do. FOOL!

There is more to it than that -  they will enhance the flavour and aroma of your coffee beans thanks to less heat generated from friction while grinding. This allows these grinders to grind the fresh coffee beans without interfering with the flavour of your freshly ground coffee beans (Flavour is key, is it not!?)

Follow our advice in this article, and you are guaranteed to be brewing superb coffee each and every morning.

The hard part is choosing a great grinder first (as not all burr grinders were created equal). We've taken time to review only the best of burr coffee grinders to help make a hard decision a little easier. Let's get into the nitty gritty.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING WHEN LOOKING FOR THE BEST BURR GRINDER:

Looking into the soul of a conical burr grinder

You'll need to put your thinking caps on when choosing a grinder. Actually, no you don't, because we've done it for you. Here is what you need to ask yourself: We’ll even review the top five products available, and you’ll be able to decide what’s best for you! Keep reading for the who, the what, and the how of teeth whitening kits (that you can use at home).

Flat or Conical Shaped Burrs?

Conical burrs are available in a wide variety of choices ranging from bargain to elite. They are designed with a relatively large surface area when compared to the flat type hence they shed heat at a faster rate.

Flat burrs use a flat disk to help with the grinding and are available from mid-range to high-end appliances. They have a larger diameter than the cone burrs hence also able to shed heat quickly.

Conical burrs are better, but this is not a huge factor, so don't get stuck here.

Steel or Ceramic Burrs?

Material-wise, Burr Coffee Grinders are either made of high-quality ceramic or stainless steel. They are also available for both budget and high-end users.

Steel burrs are cheaper to manufacture and replace though they tend to have a shorter lifespan. Ceramic burrs are durable and are ideal when it comes to producing espresso but expensive to build.

You'll generally find most machine grinders have steel burrs and hand grinders have ceramic ones.

3. Auto Grind?

Some grinders have a button. Push the button and your coffee grinds. Let go of the button and your coffee does not grind.

Some grinders have a switch/wheel. Turn the switch on and your coffee grinds. Check your Facebook news feed while you wait, and when you have enough coffee, turn the switch off.

Some grinders have both, and thats what I prefer. It gets annoying pushing and holding a button when you drink multiple cups a day.

Number of Grind Settings?

The better your burr grinder the more settings it will have. The more settings you have, the more precise you can be with your grind choice.

Baratza grinders have 40 grind settings, and commerical grinders have even more. Go for a grinder with 20 grind settings minimum.

If you want to experiment with different brew methods: more grind settings  = more flexibility and fun.

Bean Hopper Size

We prefer a grinder that can accommodate larger (rather than smaller) amounts of coffee beans for convenience sake - its just less work.

On the other hand, you don't want your beans sitting in the hopper for too long, so have a think about what option is right for you (convenience vs freshness)

Coffee Grinder Comparison

Coffee Grinder Buying Guide

What is a Coffee Grinder?

Electric coffee grinders take whole coffee beans and grind them into a fine power that can then be put in a coffee maker or expresso machine to make fresh coffee. 40% of the aroma from coffee beans are lost within minutes after grinding. When you grind your own beans you are able to make the freshest and best tasting coffee possible. Today, modern grinders will create coffee grinds in less than a minute, giving you the best coffee available at a much cheaper price than found at the local coffee shop.

Coffee grinders can also be used to grind spices, whole grains and even chick peas to make hummus. This makes the units very versatile. Most are small in size enabling you to add a kitchen appliance without taking up much space in an already packed kitchen.

Type of Coffee Beans Will You Be Grinding

When you drink a cup of coffee, how do you like your coffee? Do you like your coffee strong and textured or do you prefer your coffee with less body? By grinding your own coffee beans you will be able to produce a professional and fresh tasting cup of coffee that will allow you relax.

When choosing a coffee grinder look at the coarseness options and make sure it will grind to a level you prefer. Many have settings for coarse, medium, or fine cut grind. Others are manually operated allowing you to determine when the coffee beans are at the coarseness you prefer. Typically the shorter the brew time the finer texture of the grind. For instance, when you want to make an espresso, the brew time is extremely short and will need a finer grind. Traditional coffee makers can take a courser grind.

Manual vs Electric Grinder

Manual grinders are cheaper with fewer moving parts. Because there are less moving parts, manual coffee grinders tend to last longer than electric grinders. Manual coffee grinders, however, take more time to operate than electric units. Electric grinders on the other hand can complete grinding to your preferred coarseness in under a minute. The electric grinders can give you more precision when it comes to various grinds. Manual units are better for courser grinds as it is difficult to get a finely ground finished product. Electric units also have more versatility and can grind more than just coffee beans.

Blade and Grinder Types

The highest quality blade on the market are blades that are constructed with stainless steel. Non stainless steel blades can clog more easily and will dull faster. While clogging may appear as an inconvenience, clogging can also wear down the blades faster and make clean up time more tedious.

There are three types of coffee grinders associated with different types of blades. The three types of coffee grinders are: blade grinders, burr grinders, and conical burrs.

Blade Grinders are constructed with a flat spinning blade. The blade grinders produce the ideal coffee bean grinds for French press and stovetop percolator coffee machines. The blade grinder does not produce the most consistent grind size, the coarseness will provide you with a perfect cup of coffee when used with the proper coffee maker. Blade grinders are very easy to clean and can be noisier due to their low speed.

Burr Grinders are designed with two flat disks for blades. The two flat disks will shave the coffee beans into flakes allowing your coffee bean grinds to work perfectly with drip coffee makers. Burr grinders are able to give you a more consistent grind. However, this type of coffee grinder is noisy and can be messy.

Conical BurrCoffee Grinders are designed with many conical plates that will shave the coffee beans into flakes. Conical burr coffee grinders are not as messy as the burr grinders and will give you a consistent coarseness use after use. Conical burrs are quieter than burr grinders and blade grinders. This is because they have a higher speed motor. However, this type of coffee grinder typically has a complicated design making it so they are not as easy to clean.

What Type of Coffee Maker Do You Have?

Different types of coffee makers require different coarseness of the grinds. For instance, French press and stovetop percolators coffee makers require a coarse grind. The general drip coffee makers work best if you have a medium to fine grind. This is an important feature to think about before you purchase a coffee grinder in order to make a refreshing professional cup of coffee.

Power Level

You can purchase coffee grinders with different watts. Low speed coffee grinders typically have 150 watts while high speed coffee grinders typically have around 300 watts. High speed coffee grinders are generally less expensive. However, with a higher wattage, the coffee grinders transfer the heat to the coffee beans as they are ground which can lead to scorching or burning of the beans. Lower speed coffee grinders are more expensive and because of the slower speed, the coffee beans will stay cooler. The main downside to the low speed coffee grinders is that because they are slower, the machine will dull faster and potentially need to be replaced within a shorter period of time.

Noise

Based on your living situation will determine if noise matters to you. However, if you have kids or need to be quiet when you make your coffee, a lower speed wattage would work better for you because they are quieter.

Ease of Cleaning

Coffee grinders that have fewer parts or allow you to remove the cup that holds the coffee beans will be easier to clean. It is important for you to be able to clean the coffee grinder since flavors can mix if the unit is not cleaned frequently. If you are unable to clean your coffee grinder efficiently, residue will be left over, which will affect the taste and smell of future coffee. Generally, blade coffee grinders are the hardest to clean, while conical burr coffee grinders are the easiest to clean.

Conclusion

When selecting a coffee grinder start with the type of coffee you like to drink and the coffee maker options you currently have. Then consider features like motor speed, noise and the coarseness options. Will you be using the unit for spices, herbs and grains or only for grinding coffee beans? This could lead to the need for more features.

Coffee grinders do not need to be an expensive accessory to your kitchen appliances, but can add to the quality of your morning coffee by offering freshly ground beans to enjoy. Today many different flavors of beans are readily available giving you the opportunity to not only enjoy a better quality cup of coffee, but a less expensive one as well.

What is a Coffee Grinder? (with pictures)

turquoisePost 6

@ankara-- Sure, why not.

But keep in mind that if you've been using your coffee grinder, the scent of coffee has probably lingered in it and might change the scent and flavor of the spices that you grind inside. Of course, it goes the other way around too. If you grind spices and then grind coffee, the flavor of your coffee might be different. That's not exactly desirable.

But I know that there are coffee bean grinders which are marketed as coffee, nut and spice grinders all in one. I actually got one for my friend as a wedding present.

So it's kind of up to you if you want to go ahead with it. It's definitely possible to grind things like spices and nuts with a coffee grinder. But I certainly wouldn't put food in it; it's not a food processor.

bluedolphinPost 5

Can I use a coffee grinder to grind things other than coffee?

I need to grind some spices but I don't have a spice grinder at home, only a coffee grinder. Is it okay if I use it?

candyquiltPost 4

@rallenwriter-- I agree with you. Not only is the flavor of freshly grounded coffee really good, but the scent too. I absolutely love the scent, it's almost addictive. I think I get more pleasure out of that scent when I have just grounded some coffee beans than the coffee itself.

I have a really old electric coffee grinder machine that I got years ago when I was in Germany. But it works perfectly well, it's small and simple. You just plug it in, put in the coffee beans, place the cover and press on it which gets it going.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't allow me to select how coarse I want the coffee. So I have to grind a little bit and then stop to check if it's done. That's the only annoying part about my grinder.

EarlyForestPost 3

Does anybody have any good tips on how to buy the best burr coffee grinder for a beginner? I really want to get a good starter one, but there are just so many options. Does anybody have any advice?

StreamFinderPost 2

There are some types of coffee grinders designed for specific purposes -- for instance, espresso coffee grinders.

They are specially designed to give the extra fine, powdery grain needed for perfect espresso, which might be hard to get with other grinders, especially cheap coffee grinders.

I personally use a Cuisinart coffee grinder, but for me, anything that gets the job done is good enough -- I'm not super picky.

rallenwriterPost 1

My friends think I'm a coffee snob, but I can't live without my french press and coffee grinder. Honestly, I really would rather not drink coffee if I don't grind it and brew it myself -- it's something about the freshness of the beans that is just addictive.

I think its one of those things that once you get started doing it, you can't imagine stopping. It kind of becomes a ritual. Although right now I only have an automatic coffee grinder, I'm on the lookout for a manual coffee grinder, to make it even more special.

#1 | Rancilio Rocky – The Best Bang for Your Buck

At the top of our list is the Rancilio Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder. As the best coffee grinder for the price, you can expect to get a top of the line appliance at a price that reflects the quality of performance.

This grinder is a little on the more expensive side but it is built to last. With an investment in the Rancilio Rocky, you won't find yourself needing to replace your coffee grinder in a few months or years. This one-time purchase will get you through cup after cup of your favorite coffee drinks.

The Rancilio Rocky has 50mm plate grinding burrs, making it perfectly capable of handling all your coffee bean grinding needs, busting through up to 7.7 pounds of coffee per hour. The hopper, located at the top of the grinder, can hold over half a pound of coffee beans, allowing you to simply press the start button whenever you're in need.

The hopper is not removable, so you may run into problems if you are hoping to quickly switch between coffee beans or flavors. If you think you will need to make frequent changes, you will only want to put enough beans for the exact amount of grounds that you want.

Although the grinder is extremely quiet, you shouldn't mistake that to mean it isn't powerful. The 166-watt direct drive motor spins at 1725 RPMs to quickly cut through your favorite coffee beans, turning them into powder in just a few seconds.

The Rancilio Rocky allows you to change grind setting quickly and easily. Simply unlock the lever and make a simple adjustment to the hopper, giving you the opportunity to grind your beans to the exact consistency you need.

The Rancilio Rocky dispenses the coffee grounds directly into a portafilter or other vessel of your choosing, so you can easily transfer them to your espresso machine or coffee maker.

Each Rancilio Rocky is tested using real coffee beans before it is packaged and shipped off. These individual tests ensure that your product does not have defects and is capable of performing to the highest standards and abilities. However, it also means that you may find some leftover ground residue in your coffee grinder after purchase.

As a top rated coffee grinder, the Rancilio Rocky can meet needs both in the home and in commercial locations. If you're looking for a powerful grinder that is built for years of work, the Rancilio Rocky can be a great option.

Pros

  • Powerful grinding burrs with a strong – yet quiet - motor
  • Various grinding settings for different texture grounds
  • Built to last through many years of coffee bean grinding

Cons

  • Slightly expensive, so may not fit in all budgets
  • May come with test grounds still in the appliance

#2 | Baratza Vario – The Easy to Use Professional Option

The Baratza Vario is only for the serious coffee lovers, and the price point reflects that.

Although the price of the Baratza Vario is large, the appliance itself is small. It can tuck easily into open areas on your counter or in cabinets, so it will not take up too much space on your counter. As a smaller coffee grinder, this is also a great option for offices, dorms, or shared spaces.

This burr coffee grinder is incredibly versatile, with 230 different grind settings. Through both macro and micro adjustments, you can get the exact texture you're looking for. Whether you're hoping to brew coffee in your press pot or you would like a fine grind for an espresso, the Baratza Vario allows you to get the most of your coffee grinder.

The burrs of the Baratza Vario are 54 mm, so they grind accurately and precisely, but they are also ceramic, so they can stay stronger than standard steel burs. As a powerful burr grinder, the Baratza Vario can grind up to 1.6 grams of coffee per second in the espresso setting and 2.2 grams of coffee per second at the press setting.

The Baratza Vario is designed to keep leftover grounds to a minimum in the grinder, keeping each brew fresh and tasting excellent.

As a high-tech option for a coffee grinder, the Baratza Vario has a LED display that allows you to create pre-set grinding options. To quickly get your favorite grinds for your most desired coffee drinks, simply hit one of the pre-set buttons and you don't need to worry about adjusting the settings.

The Baratza Vario also comes with a Portaholder, so you do not need to hold your filter during the grinding process. Simply set up the coffee grinder to your liking, press the start button, and let it go until it is finished. This allows you to complete the rest of your prep while the coffee is grinding.

Pros

  • Fine tuning of grind settings allows for precise level of fineness or coarseness
  • Small enough to easy store when not in use
  • Includes a Portaholder for hands-free use
  • Built to provide consistent, high-quality grinding for years to come

Cons

  • Most expensive coffee grinder on this list
  • Grinding can be on the louder side compared to other models
  • Number of settings can be overwhelming for some

#3 | Breville The Smart Grinder – The Best Grinder for Precise Measuring

Getting the perfect cup of coffee or espresso relies on using just the right amount of your favorite coffee grounds. With grinders that put the pressure on you to stop the machine when you have enough, it is easy to get too little or too many grounds – affecting the taste of your favorite coffee drinks.

But the Breville Smart Grinder makes it easy for you to easily set the grind time to get the perfect amount of coffee. With 0.2 second increments, adjusting the grinder to only cut through the exact amount of coffee beans that you need is easier than ever.

The Breville Smart Grinder also has 60 different grind settings, ranging from fine grinds for making espresso to coarse cuts for using your favorite French Press. For coffee lovers of all kinds, this top rated coffee grinder can be a one-time purchase to cover all your needs.

To go with the wide variety of grinds, this grinder also allows you to catch the ground coffee with whichever vessel or filter makes the most sense for your kind of brewing. Choose to have your coffee grounds go directing into the portafilter, a gold-tone basket, or even paper filter. Or if you're looking to grind all your beans at once, they can go directly into a container.

The Breville Smart Grinder hopper can hold up to 16 ounces of coffee beans. The burrs of this coffee grinder are conical, which help to reduce heat while operating. Because the conical burrs can stay cooler than other materials, it does not compromise the essential oils in your coffee beans.

Because the Breville Smart Grinder focuses on delivering precise measurements and grind times, you know you're getting a consistent grind each time you use the appliance. While this is great for the home or the office, it can also be a strong option for businesses looking to provide a consistent product to customers.

This coffee grinder is a high-quality option that will still stick within your budget.

Pros

  • 60 different grind settings to get the exact level of coarseness or fineness for your desired coffee drink
  • Unique time settings to get just the right amount of grounds each time
  • Removable hopper for easy cleaning or transfer of beans

Cons

  • Grinder pieces are not dishwasher safe and must be washed by hand
  • Should not be used for anything other than coffee, such as seeds

#4 | Baratza Virtuoso – The Simple Choice

While many grinders on this list boast having many different options, settings, and features, the Baratza Virtuoso boasts simplicity and ease of use. But don't mistake that to mean it can't handle all of your coffee needs.

The Baratza Virtuoso has a clean and simple design, free off too many knobs, levers, or adjustment bars that can make it difficult to use or understand. Instead, the design is clean, with just a dial for adjustments and an on and off switch to begin the grinding process.

The top hopper can be twisted to adjust between 40 different settings, ranging from fine grounds for espresso to coarse grounds for the French Press. With a 60-second timer option, you can also easily get a consistent amount of grounds each time you use the appliance.

The Baratza Virtuoso has a number of systems in place to prevent heating of the coffee grounds during grinding. First, as a conical burr coffee grinder, the burrs themselves will stay cooler than steel or other materials. At 40mm, the conical burrs make this a great coffee grinder for espresso lovers.

The motor of the Baratza Virtuoso works efficiently, preventing itself from overheating and heating the coffee beans. Gear speed reducers will also slow the burrs when necessary to both prevent heat from reaching the beans but to also keep noise to a minimum while grinding.

The Baratza Virtuoso's sleek and simple design makes it a great option for leaving on your counters or even tucked away in an office. Because it is small and simple, it can easily be stored when it is not in use.

However, the simplicity of this model is not for everyone. If you're looking for an easy to use burr grinder that you can rely on, but does not have all the added bells and whistles that other models have, the Baratza Virtuoso can be the right option for you. If you want to take total control of your coffee grinding, you may want a grinder with more options.

The Baratza Virtuoso may not be a cheap coffee grinder, it is still an affordable enough option to not break your budget.

Pros

  • Simple, clean design that makes it easy to use and store
  • Grind settings that range from fine to coarse, able to meet any and all of your coffee needs
  • Preventative measures for overheating the coffee beans, locking in essential oils
  • Affordable price tag

Cons

  • Smaller range of settings than other grinders on this list
  • Coffee ground bin shape and location can cause some minor spilling

#5 | Baratza Encore – For the Budget Coffee Drinker

One of the biggest benefits of buying a coffee grinder at home is to stop spending your money on overpriced coffees each morning. But if you're on a budget, it probably means you don't have hundreds and hundreds of dollars to spend on your coffee grinder. For a cheap coffee grinder that can still give you a high-quality grind, the Baratza Encore is the best option for you.

Called an "entry-level grinder," the Baratza Encore is the easiest to use grinder on this list. The Baratza Encore is great for the college student, young professional, or individual just starting to learn about making excellent coffee at home.

While the Baratza Encore is simple to use, it still has 40 different grind settings to give you just the right amount of ground texture you need for brewing. With 40 mm conical burrs, the Baratza Encore will stay sharp for many years.

Like the Baratza Virtuoso, the Baratza Encore takes extra precautions to reduce the heat that the coffee beans feel during grinding. The DC motor works efficiently to prevent overheating and gear speed reducers can reduce noise and static buildup.

To adjust the coarseness or fineness of the grounds, simply rotate the hopper until it is at the texture that you're looking for. Then, to operate the Baratza Encore, you can either use the side dial to start a hands-free grinding process or press the front pulse button to grind just the right amount of beans.

The Baratza Encore is the best coffee grinder for espresso and manual brew coffee for the home or office. Without the many different dials, settings, or functions that you may find with more advanced coffee grinders, the Baratza Encore can be used by individuals of any age or level of experience with coffee grinders.

That being said, the Baratza Encore may disappoint if you are looking to create incredibly intricate or precise coffee drinks. For professional baristas or avid lovers of espresso, a more expensive and more feature-full grinder may be a better option.

Pros

  • Affordable option for a high-quality coffee grinder in the home or office
  • Easy to follow instructions and settings make this easy to use for all individuals
  • Provides professional-grade grinding without the professional-level price

Cons

  • Does not have the same advanced features that individuals may be looking for
  • Does not have a timer for consistent measuring or grinding
  • Can be a bit messy while grinding

How to Choose the Best Coffee Grinder

All coffee lovers have a coffee style preference. Some people like their coffee full bodied with a full crema, other people like extra strong Turkish coffee, while other people like their coffee will less body and less intensity like a cafe latte.

Maybe you are looking for a coffee grinder that can grind enough beans for one or two people or a larger commercial type model that can make a lot of coffee for guests at a dinner party or barbecue.

As well as thinking about your coffee needs, there are other pertinent questions to be asked like:

  • What types of coffee grinders are available: manual or electric?
  • What specific grinding process do they use: blades or burrs?
  • What types of settings do they have: simple operations or more complex settings that allow you to grind the beans in a lot of different ways?
  • Do they feature a stepped or step-less grind system?
  • Is the grinder very noisy when it grinds the beans?
  • Does the grinder come in a small compact size or is it bulky?
  • Does the grinder have removable parts, which makes it easy to clean?

Thinking about how you like your coffee and who you will prepare it, and by asking the above questions, will start you on your journey to finding just the right type of coffee grinder.

Manual Coffee Grinders

Manual grinders are definitely the cheaper option, and although they may take longer to achieve the final grind that you desire, they are very easy to use. A manual coffee grinder can achieve a coarser grind but it may take longer to grind coffee into a finer consistency that you will need for an espresso style coffee. So if you like the sound of a “hands-on approach” to coffee grinding, a manual coffee grinder is certainly a great choice for making small amounts of coffee.

One of the best things about a manual coffee grinder is its high-level portability, like the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder, which looks just like a salt or pepper grinder. It can deliver a consistent grind and it is very easy to use plus you can even use it for grinding spices. Even though it is simple to use, the JavaPresse has 18 grind settings so that you can grind your coffee according to your personal preference.

A manual coffee grinder is just perfect for backpackers or travelers who want to grind their own coffee into a French press or a traveling mug or flask, or for people who want better quality coffee at work, or for camping. But if you want to have more control over your coffee grinding, to get the right consistency and texture to your coffee grounds, choose an electric coffee grinder.

Electric Coffee Grinders

If you drink a lot of coffee and host a lot of parties or barbecues where your guests also love restaurant quality coffee, you need an electric coffee grinder. Electric coffee grinders can range in price depending on whether they have a simple operating system or a fully automated system that provides you with a wide range of grind settings and a large container or hopper capacity for processing a lot of coffee beans.

Some low-range coffee grinders like the KitchenAid BCG111OB Blade Coffee Grinder is very affordable. It has no super deluxe grind settings or timers, but it features a simple modus operandi, where you just simply press the top of the grinder for the length of time required and the result is still great tasting coffee.

More expensive grinders have fully automated grinding systems and they give you more grinding options. If you are a coffee connoisseur, an electric coffee grinder is a perfect grinder for you. How many settings a coffee grinder has is very important as it allows you to get the exact grind consistency, final flavor, and aroma you want.

Settings can range depending on the manufacturer. The Capresso Infinity Grinder has 16 settings, the Rancilio Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder has 50 settings, and the Breville The Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Bean Grinder has a whopping amount of 60 settings. Electric coffee grinders allow you to grind coffee at just the press of a button, and they are faster, but they may be noisy in their operation and as they have more moving parts, they are hard to keep clean.

Settings

Besides the style and operating specifications, one of the most important parts of a coffee grinder is its settings, or what options it gives you for grinding the beans. However you like your coffee, flat white, cappuccino, macchiato, the quality of the coffee will all depend on the grinding process, i.e. how the beans are ground in the coffee grinder: coarse, medium-coarse, medium, medium-fine, fine or extra fine. Here are some things to consider in relation to grinding levels:

  • Over grinding or under grinding the beans will result in coffee that is too bitter or coffee that does not have enough flavor.
  • If the grind is too fine, the water will stay in contact with the coffee which can result in coffee that is too strong or bitter. If the grind is too coarse, the water will have trouble permeating through the coffee grounds which can result in weak tasteless coffee.
Operating Features

Manual and electric coffee grinders can either use a blade or a burr, which is also called a disc, to grind the beans.

Blade Grinders versus Burr Grinders

Blade coffee grinders grind the beans by using a propeller-like flat blade but this type of grinder can be quite noisy, and the final coffee grounds may have an uneven texture and at high speeds, the beans can be scorched.

Although the blade grinders may not always produce a consistent level of grind for Espresso-type coffee or Turkish coffee, this type of grinder does quite well as grinding beans for a French press or percolator coffee machine. But that is not to say that a blade grinder cannot deliver the coffee style you like. There are simple things you can do to get just the right consistency and final grind from the machine. The manufacturer’s instructions can give you some tips on how to get the best results from the grinder and there are plenty of videos on Youtube that can help you to become an expert coffee grinder.

High-end electric coffee grinders use two burrs or discs to grind the beans and the burrs can either be stainless steel or ceramic and flat or conical. If you want to learn more about conical and flat burrs click here.

Burr coffee grinders work so much better than blade grinders as they grind the beans to a better consistency. The Capresso 565 Infinity Coffee Grinder has two commercial grade solid steel conical burrs that deliver high precision grinding. Capresso has specially designed these burrs to work at a slower grinding speed as opposed to flat burrs, they create less friction and heat build up which preserves maximum aroma and retains flavor in any grind setting.

There are advantages and disadvantages to stainless-steel and ceramic burrs.

The advantages of stainless steel burrs are that they are generally cheaper to manufacture and replace and they are ideal for making pour over, automatic drip, siphon, French press style coffee. If a rock or a foreign object gets into the hopper, it can cause some damage, but the grinder can still continue to function. The disadvantages of steel burrs are that they do not last as long as a ceramic burr.

Ceramic burrs last twice as long as steel burrs and they can produce the right texture that is needed for espresso coffee and they are not as messy as steel burrs. The downside of ceramic burrs is that they can shatter if they hit a rock or foreign object which can render the machine unusable until it has been fixed.

Doser Grinders versus Doserless Grinders

A coffee grinder that has a doser dispenses the coffee grounds into a staging area or container which holds the coffee grounds and then doses the appropriate amount of coffee grounds into a portafilter basket. A doserless model, like the Rancilio Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder, allows you to load the grounds directly into the portafilter that is held by a retaining fork. A doserless grinder allows you more versatility as you can remove the retaining fork and place a brew basket or French Press under the spout to catch the coffee grounds.

Other User-friendly Features

Electric coffee grinders may have other features that make your coffee grinding experience easier and faster. Some grinders like the Breville Smart Grinder has an LCD screen control panel that allows you to choose and monitor just the right amount of shots per cup and the level of grind. The Breville grinder also takes coffee grinding to a new level as there is an activation switch that is located beneath the chute and as soon as you position the portafilter, the grinding process automatically begins.

Other high-end, commercial style coffee grinders like the Mazzer Mini Espresso Grinder, which has a step-less micro-metrical grind adjustment, allows you to fine tune your coffee grounds.

While electric grinders give you absolute control over the final grind, whether it is a coarse grind, medium-fine or fine grind in under one minute, these bigger machines can be noisy and messy until you learn how to master them. Here is a video on how to get the right grind when using an electric coffee grinder.

5 Reasons Why a Hand Coffee Grinder is Right for You

The advantages of hand grinding your coffee may surprise you.

This article was written in collaboration with Team Handground. Join the community here.

Would you rather drink coffee that was pre-ground with a burr grinder a week ago, or coffee that was ground fresh with a blade grinder?

The team at Able Brewing recently conducted a blind tasting to answer this question. Was freshness or grind consistency more important when brewing coffee?

The team of testers took a freshly roasted batch of coffee and ground half with a high performance burr grinder. They left the other half as whole bean and sealed both samples in air-tight coffee bags for one week.

On the day of the tasting, they ground the whole bean coffee with a blade grinder and then brewed the two samples side-by-side. Not knowing which coffee was which, a group of coffee professionals and consumers tasted both coffees and gave their opinions on each.

Unsurprisingly, neither cup of coffee came out great. However, when the tasters gave their recommendations, they couldn’t decide which cup was better. The fresh, inconsistently ground coffee from the blade grinder was just as bad as the week old pre-ground from the burr grinder.

This test is a little jarring given the importance we place on fresh coffee. It proves that it’s not only important to grind your beans fresh, but you need the right type of coffee grinder to do it.

The 3 Styles of Coffee Grinder

Better Grind, More Flavor

There are three main styles of grinder to choose from: the blade grinder, the electric burr grinder, and the manual burr grinder, often called a hand coffee grinder.

Blade grinders are the most common type of coffee grinder because of their low price point and compact size. But as the blind tasting concluded, their inconsistent grind can have a huge negative impact on the taste of the coffee.

On the other hand, electric burr grinders are known for providing consistent grind sizes. Yet these also have their downsides; they come with a hefty price tag and their bulkiness and noise levels can be buzzkills.

Hand coffee grinders give you the best of both styles by offering a consistent grind for a fraction of the cost. They have become the preferred choice of a growing community in the specialty coffee world due to their versatility, reliability, and “hands-on” appeal.

We tapped into the passion of the coffee community when we set out to build a new manual coffee grinder. From home brewers to national barista champions, people from all corners of the world joined us to create a new style of hand grinder that’s precise, easy to use, and cheaper than electric models.

Hand coffee grinders are a serious option for anyone who wants to brew great coffee at home. Here are five reasons why a hand grinder might be right for you.

1. Grind Consistency

A blade grinder chops coffee beans into uneven sized bits while a burr grinder crushes them to a consistent size

A consistent grind is just as important as buying fresh coffee. Coffee grounds should be the same size so they dissolve at the same rate.

Imagine you’re baking cookies with grandma’s favorite recipe. You begin dosing out the cookie dough onto a baking sheet, but instead of making the cookie dough piles the same size, you make them several different sizes.

What will happen when you bake the cookies? The small pieces will begin to burn while the large pieces remain uncooked. This is what happens to uneven coffee grounds as you brew.

Different sized coffee grounds will dissolve at different rates, leaving some grounds under-extracted and others over-extracted.  These under- and over-extracted grounds will add sour and bitter flavors to your coffee.

A burr grinder will help you get the most out of fresh coffee. Unlike a blade grinder, a burr grinder breaks coffee down into evenly-sized particles to ensure an even extraction.

Burr grinders utilize a pair of sharp, precisely shaped cutting stones called “burrs” that do a way better job at grinding coffee to a consistent size.

Blade grinders, on the other hand, don’t really “grind” your coffee at all. Instead, they chop your beans into uneven sized bits, turning some coffee beans to dust and leaving others as large chunks.

2. Price

However, electric burr grinders are expensive. The best home models cost over $200, and almost all acceptable models cost more than $100. The quality of grind drops significantly when you begin looking at electric burr grinders cheaper than this.

The problem with cheap electric burr grinders is the set of burrs they use. Most do not use burrs made of ceramic or metal, but instead use “false burrs” with sharp cutting blades that chop up the beans into uneven sized grounds, just like a blade grinder.

On the other end of the price spectrum are blade grinders, which can be as cheap as $15 but maintain their consistency issues no matter the price.

A hand coffee grinder provides a consistent grind while selling for less than the cheapest acceptable electric model. Without the cost of a motor, hand coffee grinders put more focus on the pieces that truly matter: the burrs.

And you’re not just paying less, you’re gaining other valuable features with a manual coffee grinder that electric grinders cannot provide.

3. Mobility

The team at Hatchet Coffee explore the Appalacian Mountains while brewing coffee

Hand coffee grinders save you money and give you more. Making your own coffee while you travel is much cheaper than buying expensive cups of coffee at the cafe. It can also save you from the even more horrible fate of drinking hotel coffee.

Your Baratza Preciso might be good for home, but if you’re on the road, an 8lb electric burr grinder is not going to work.

Many coffee companies are catering to the galavanting coffee lover by creating travel kits to bring your brew wherever you go. What do all these travel kits have in common? A hand coffee grinder.

Hand coffee grinders are mobile by nature and have inspired some travelers to combine their love for both coffee and adventure. Jeremy Parnell, co-founder of Hatchet Coffee in Boone, North Carolina, recently took his travel coffee gear on a week long climbing trip in the Ozark Mountains.

“Brewing outside is such a different experience than brewing indoors," said Parnell, "I feel more aware of my surroundings and tend to enjoy the coffee more. I savor and think about each sip.”

Whether you’re backpacking, vacationing, or taking a business trip, a hand coffee grinder lets you take your coffee with you wherever you go.

4. Noise Level

Hand coffee grinders are also useful at home. If you’re an early riser in a house of light sleepers, you want to think about the amount of noise your coffee grinder is making.

Are hand coffee grinders quieter than electric grinders? We decided to test the difference by measuring the noise levels of each. In a quiet kitchen, we ground coffee with Handground and measured the noise output with a decibel reader. Handground clocked in at about 73 decibels, or the noise level of classroom chatter.

Next we ran the Baratza Encore, which registered more than 80 decibels, 10 times louder than Handground (Every increase of 10dB on the scale is equivalent to a 10-fold increase in sound intensity. Here’s a good article about how decibels work). That’s the difference between people talking and city traffic driving through your kitchen.

If noise is an issue for you or your household, then a hand coffee grinder will be a very welcomed addition to your morning routine.

5. The Process

An amazon review from the happy owner of a hand coffee grinder

Some activities like woodworking, gardening, and manual coffee brewing have more convenient alternatives, yet people choose to invest time in these activities because they love the process. Convenience is irrelevant; the sense of pride that comes with creating something is worth far more than the time it takes to do it.

Using a hand coffee grinder can also be good for you. Our digital world delivers anything we want in an instant, and this state of being constantly connected can lead to burnout.

Grinding coffee by hand can give you a much needed mental break throughout your day. Christopher J. Penn calls the time he spends hand grinding his coffee, “required boredom”.

“It’s a healthy thing, because in those 10 minutes, you can give your mind time to process problems and step back from work."

Using a hand coffee grinder is a chance to go analog for part of your day, to unplug and simply focus on the task at hand. Sure, it takes a little extra time in the morning, but the tactile experience of creating your coffee is a reward in itself.

Discover Coffee Brewing Freedom

Your coffee grinder has a huge impact on the taste of your coffee. Just like you wouldn’t skimp on the quality of your beans, you do not want to cut corners with the quality of your grind.

You don’t need to buy an expensive electric burr grinder to achieve a consistent grind. Hand coffee grinders offer the consistency you need at a price point you can achieve. Their mobility lets you take your coffee everywhere you go, and they don’t wake up the entire house when you’re home.

Most of all, manually grinding your beans brings you closer to the drink you love.

Don’t compromise. You can have great coffee at a good cost, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. A hand coffee grinder is your ticket on this train of coffee brewing freedom. All aboard!

Coffee Grinding and Grinders - Home Grounds

The coffee grinder is the most overlooked piece of the puzzle when it comes to brewing great coffee. Without the right coffee grinder, or knowledge about coffee grinding, you'll never come close to brewing that perfect cup of coffee.

You are about to learn everything that you need to know about grinding coffee the right way. Don't forget to check out this coffee grind chart for easy grinding before you go!

Why is Grinding Coffee so Important?

One of the most important steps to make delicious coffee happens before you begin to brew. Grinding your beans correctly is a necessity that most people overlook.

Some poor souls naively employ a blade grinder, mercilessly pummelling their beans into inconsistent particles, while others (and heaven help those who do) happily dump pre-ground coffee into their coffeemakers, unaware that these grounds are as stale as the neglected bag of Fritos in the back of their pantry.

Coffee beans are delicate and deserve to be treated with care if you want them to relinquish their savoury oils and rich flavors. To get the most out of your beans, you should invest in a burr grinder, manual or electric.

Though there is some overlap, most brew methods call for different grind sizes. A burr grinder will give you control over how fine or coarse your grounds are, a (mostly) hopeless dream with a blade grinder.

A well matched grind-and-brew method will yield a full extraction and a balanced cup. If hot water is allowed to mingle with your grounds for too long (the result of an overly fine grind) then it will begin to absorb the harsher, more acrid solubles. Too short, and you’ll miss out on the good stuff.

A proper grinder will also ensure that the coffee particles are of a uniform shape. Coffee grounds that are the same shape allow water to pass through in a predictable manner, which is crucial to planning out your brew.

If you can’t accurately regulate the rate of flow, then you may end up with gutter-worthy coffee one day, and mind-blowing coffee the next and never know why.

Make the investment to grind your beans the right way, and you will be rewarded with day after day of coffee so good you may never see your local barista again (he always gets your name wrong anyways).

Types of Coffee Grinders

WAR has been declared.

Online, in the coffee forums, that is. The war is over coffee grinders.

It’s a bloodbath, with fanatics and scholars digging in deep and hurling poorly spelled, poorly supported opinions at one another.

Burr vs. blade, manual vs. electric, flat burr vs. conical burr; the battleground is vast. Yet amidst all this turmoil, a few nuggets of truth have managed to slip through.

The most substantial certainty is that burr grinders are exceedingly better than blade grinders. When it comes to tasty coffee, the essential elements are consistency and control, two things a blade grinder is terrible at.

Between a manual and an electric grinder you will find a debate mostly full of opinions parading as facts. Though an espresso enthusiast’s love of an electric burr grinder is valid, the rest is up to personal preference and/or wallet size.

The differences separating flat burr and conical burr grinders is much more subtle. Flat burr grinders, the newest and (generally) more expensive contender has its merits for those seeking to play outside the box; yet the conical burr grinder is a classic that far from being eclipsed.
