IN MEMORIAM

Giovanni “Papa Gianni” Giotta (1920-2016)

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Customers:

It is with “cuor’ pesante” (heavy heart) that I must report to you the passing of my father.  This little dynamo of a man founded our company, accomplished so much and made so many feel good with his personality, service and music.  His unique expressions-his hands, his words and his songs, are preserved in history.  He was at the core of my musical upbringing and life, and our world will never be the same without him.  Below is his complete obituary as it will appear in the San Francisco Chronicle.

~ Fabio G. Giotta

Giovanni “Papa Gianni” Giotta

May 1, 1920 – June 11, 2016

The Patriarch of the Giotta Family was called Home by Our Lord last Saturday.  He was known as “The Espresso Pioneer of the West Coast” as founder of the Internationally known “Caffe Trieste” in San Francisco’s North Beach in 1956.  Papa Gianni opened the Caffe just over 60 years ago; it has been well chronicled for its unique blend Old World family atmosphere (the entire family worked there for decades), artistry (the Giotta Family members’ collective singing and instrumental careers started in the U.S. with a 1953 radio appearance) and quality coffee, the result of the family’s unique roasting and blending techniques.

Papa Gianni was born in Rovigno D’Istria, Italy, in the Northeastern sector that would become part of the newly formed Yugoslavia after WW II.  Papa Gianni and wife Ida, son Gianfranco and daughter Sonia left their native land as refugees, moving to nearby Monfalcone, Italy in 1947,  immigrating to the U.S. in 1951. On a handshake, fellow Italian immigrant Palladini loaned Gianni $7,000 for his purchase of Il Piccolo Caffe at 601 Vallejo Street, which wife Ida promptly renamed “Caffe Trieste”.

In 1971, singers Papa and son Gianfranco (1944-1999) found a way to combine their musical work with the Caffe, establishing the Longest Running Musical Show in the City of San Francisco-the Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert.  Mamma Ida (vocals) and son Fabio (vocals and accordion) joined the effort almost immediately, with daughter Sonia joining what had become an organized musical troop in the 1980’s.  Papa continued to perform in the Concert and elsewhere until recently.

Papa Gianni realized many of his dreams; two of the most notable were recording a live LP of the Concert and producing a video of the Caffe and Concert as well.  Additional video and audio pieces were later released under the Trieste Records label.  Papa also helped develop the company in to a small chain in the 2000’s.

Papa Gianni Giotta is survived by his wife of 76 years, Ida, his daughter Sonia, son Fabio, and granddaughters Nicole, Ida and Gianna.  Services on Friday, June 17, 2016: viewing at 10 a.m. followed by funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 666 Filbert Street, San Francisco. Interment at St. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in San Rafael, CA.  A Celebration of Life will be held at Caffe Trieste-NorthBeach on Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Flowers may be sent to Halsted N. Gray, 1123 Sutter Street, San Francisco.  Papa Gianni had a special place in his heart for the vital help he got from the Franciscan Friars O.F.M. of Rovigno when he was a child, and as a young immigrant father, from the Salesians in North Beach and the Italian Welfare Agency in NorthBeach.  Accordingly, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Sts. Peter and Paul Church (Salesians), 666 Filbert Street, San Francisco, 94133,  Italian Community Services, 678 Green Street, San Francisco 94133 (www.italiancs.com) or the Knights of Saint Francis, 700 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, 94111 (www.knightsofsaintfrancis.org)

In the mid 2000's, Angela Alioto and Lawrence Ferlinghetti joined together to realize a vision. The vision immediately spread to all of San Francisco and far beyond; building a real Italian piazza in San Francisco’s historic North Beach.....more

an ode to Italy and its coffee cultures

Celebration of Italy’s strong coffee heritage

This Spring, Nespresso pays homage to the strong coffee heritage of Italy with two Grand Cru coffees, available for a short time only: Trieste and Napoli Limited Editions. Unique and contrasting, the Spring Limited Edition Grand Cru duo celebrates two Italian cities that are delightfully distinct in character yet equal in their passion for coffee.

“With its Limited Edition Grands Crus, Nespresso brings to coffee lovers around the world rare and exceptional coffee experiences. With the Trieste and Napoli Limited Editions, Nespresso was inspired by two of Italy’s most emblematic cities and coffee cultures,” said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee at Nestlé Nespresso SA.

Trieste

The Trieste Limited Edition reflects the rich and varied cultural experience to be found in Trieste.

The Trieste Limited Edition reflects the rich and varied cultural experience to be found in Trieste. The multifaceted northeastern Italian port city reflects a mix of German, Italian and Slavic cultures. All green coffee bound for the coffee houses of Vienna came through Trieste, as the gateway to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Its coffee houses were renowned places of intellectual and creative pursuit.

Reflecting this diverse culture, coffee in Trieste is taken with or without milk, long or short. The inhabitants of Trieste have even created specific terms for their coffee: “nero” is an espresso, “capo” has a dash of milk and coffee served in a glass rather than the usual china cup is “in b”.

Similarly, the Trieste Limited Edition is delightful both with and without milk. With an intensity level of 9, Trieste is a subtle blend of 100% Arabica beans from Brazil and eastern Africa offering notes of chocolate and fresh hazelnuts, a round texture and a fruity touch. While it is best enjoyed as a ristretto (25 ml), Limited Edition Trieste reveals intense, roasted coffee notes with a hint of brown caramel and nuts when served as a cappuccino.

Napoli

Coffee also holds a special place in vibrant Naples, located in the south of Italy. Here, the first domestic appliance to prepare coffee was invented: the “caffettiera napoletana”. This brought coffee consumption into the home, transforming it from an aristocratic drink enjoyed in cafés to a domestic pleasure.

As a rule, Neapolitans take their coffee short, dark and often sweet. “Caffè” is the word used to order what others call “espresso”.

The Nespresso interpretation of the concentrated “black gold” of Naples is Napoli: a blend of Arabica beans from South America, Africa and Asia, with a hint of Robusta. Bold and assertive with a syrupy body, it has refined, smoky notes reminiscent of dried black tea leaves. With an intensity level of 11, the Napoli Limited Edition is best enjoyed as a ristretto (25 ml). For an even more authentic tasting experience, it can be served as an even shorter cup (15-20 ml) and sweetened with sugar.

The art of coffee tasting

A coffee's crema, body, aroma, taste and intensity all play a part in its richness, bringing to life infinite experiences. By savouring and comparing Trieste and Napoli Limited Editions side by side, coffee lovers can appreciate even more the sensorial nuances of these two exquisite and distinct coffees developed by Nespresso Coffee Experts.

To celebrate the coffee tasting ritual of these Limited Edition Grands Crus, Nespresso has created a dedicated box set, containing one sleeve each of Trieste and Napoli, along with four cups and saucers.

Our Story – Caffe Trieste

Trieste Downtown, circa 1900

Our Story:La Nostra Storia

Caffe Trieste is world-famous, impeccable quality coffee mixed with the best music—from the heart! It is this unique pairing and style that have made our coffee houses comfortable dens for artists of all types. A Google search reveals a staggering amount of listings, including a Wikipedia page!

Our historic caffe location at 601 Vallejo Street (North Beach-San Francisco) was the first espresso coffee house established on the West Coast (1956). “Papa Gianni” Giotta and his family single-handedly launched the Espresso movement as we know it. The Caffe has become famous across the world for its combination of essences: Old Italy, Bohemian poets, art and music, and excellent Espresso.

The Caffe has served as comfortable respite for actors such as Michael Douglas and a movie set for many feature films and television shows (starring Bill Cosby, Demi Moore and many others) and has been the subject of many articles, news stories and documentaries across the globe. The walls are adorned with pictures of famous celebrities who have visited the Caffe (some, such as Mr. Cosby, are regular customers who take their Caffe Trieste coffee with them everywhere they go, including media interviews and even on stage!) as well as of the hundreds of musical events in which the various members of the Giotta family have participated. Established in 1971, the Caffe Trieste Saturday Concert, is the longest running musical show in San Francisco, and certainly one of the oldest in the United States. All five members of the Giotta family (Papa Gianni, Mamma Ida, ***Gianfranco, Sonia and Fabio have been performing on stage, radio, television and in films since 1953; they have performed with and for many celebrities (Luciano Pavarotti, The Drifters, Frankie Laine, Claudio Villa, and Domenico “Volare” Modugno, to name a few) in front of thousands of local, national and international audiences. ***Gianfranco Giotta (1944-1999)

“Old Italy” Written by Andy Kaufman-1988

In Rovigno and Trieste, they still talk about the Giotta family’s success in America.

Over a half a century ago, Giovanni Giotta brought his family to America. They found a new world where hard work and prudent decisions still spelled success. Remembering his fondness for the coffee houses of Trieste, Mr. Giotta, (dubbed “Papa Gianni” in the early 1990’s), decided to bring their charm and exquisite coffees to his new home.

Settling in California, he soon opened Caffe Trieste in San Francisco’s North Beach. A reputation for “…some of the best coffees in the city” soon followed.

Giovanni Giotta’s “old world” techniques proved essential in securing this reputation as well as the distinction of being called “the Espresso Pioneer of the West Coast.”

If asked how he does it, “No big deal,” Papa Gianni would say. “Buy the best beans, roast them yourself, and brew each cup like it’sfor you.”

Sure there’s technology involved, the best people-controlled technology, but that only makes the coffee “good.” The hands and heart of Giovanni Giotta make it great.

Naturally, anything great cannot stay confined for very long. Demand from other coffee houses and restaurants, as well as from patrons of the Caffe, soon made it necessary to open a retail/wholesale outlet and a second coffee house.

Papa Gianni has much to be proud of. His two children, Fabio and Sonia are helping to maintain the tradition of fine coffee making.

The right blend of love and tradition has resulted in a standard of quality previously unattained. For Caffe Trieste Superb Coffees it’s an old-fashioned way of doing things that still works.

“Brew each cup like it’s for you.”
